What magazines do you regularly read that provide both solid business tips and good stories about startup/ business life?
I have been working in corporate America for two decades and have been reading Harvard Business Review for probably 10 years. I used to read Entrepreneur but found it a bit too focused on “brick and mortar”. The last two years, I have also been reading MIT Sloan Mgmt Review for their bigger focus on tech, but, as with HBR, is still quite Wallstreet focused.
As I am building my own healthcare tech company, I am looking for some inspiration and tips that are catered to our side of the economy. What are you reading?
My suggestion would be to not read magazines. You’re on the right track with reddit. I find so much industry insight by reading comments. Magazines don’t have comments.
I agree with the reddit comment section but I’ve found many an article within HBR to be extremely useful especially when dealing with employees.
So much about running a business is about creating and managing your team.
I will say we are 6 years in and I only started reading hbr a year or two ago. In the beginning my needs were so unique to my business and industry most articles would not have covered the main hurdles I faced. But as we’ve grown I would say hbr has been a great help now that we are where we are.
- What are some other good magazines like Harvard Business Review discussing latest business and innovation trend?

Best magazine to stay informed of consultingand business-related news?
What, if any, magazines do you read to stay informed of world and business news?
I’ll be starting at MBB soon, but apart from my local newspapers and articles here and there from my social feeds I don’t read that many business-related articles, and I feel like I should try to stay better informed about what’s happening in the world that might affect the business. I was thinking of subscribing to something like The Economist or HBR.
Is a subscription worth it? If so, which magazine would you recommend?
Bloomberg, Financial Times, The Times Newspaper (if you’re UK based)
In reality what you need to pay better attention to is the industry you’re aligned to if you’re in Consumer Goods, follow the technology being deployed in the retail space. If you’re in federal services or Government, read the journals/websites looking at developments in Government. ‘Business related articles’ aren’t really going to help you, you need to focus on your industry trends. Therefore, wait until you actually start your job and get assigned.
What’s the best way to make use of content on Harvard Business Review/MIT Sloan management magazines?
Whenever I check the sites Harvard Business Review or MIT Sloan Management magazines it looks interesting but I find it to be information overload.
Is there a way to to use that info better or is it just another online magazine? Has anyone found it useful?
Wow, this is a great question. I’ve struggled with this, too. I actually subscribed to HBR for a year… and couldn’t even find time to read any of it. But…
I worked at McKinsey in college several lifetimes ago. Part of my job was to photocopy the monthly index of HBR and a bunch other publications, and distribute them to all the consultants of all levels. They would then highlight the articles they would want to read, and I would make copies as we had licenses for internal use.
So, the secret is, you can’t read it all. Pick just those articles in your expertise areas, and just focus on those. If they are truly of interest interest and use, you will use them. But in my career of many decades, the few HBR articles I’ve really made use of have been ones I found later when digging into a certain topic.
